The North-West

The Kimberley and Pilbara Regions

Comprised of the Pilbara and Kimberley regions, North-Western Australia is the closest part of Australia’s mainland, to India. Port Hedland in the Pilbara region, is the largest port by cargo tonnage in Australia, and Australia’s closest deep-water port to Asia and the Middle East.

The Kimberley region to the north of the Pilbara, contains large tracts of arable land within the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA). The ORIA is watered by Lake Argyle, the Australian mainland’s largest body of freshwater by volume (10,763 million cubic metres). Agriproduct from the ORIA is exported via the nearby Port of Wyndham.
